The Shouting Matches – Avery Hill

If you’ve ever wanted to hear Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon’s voice without its soft timbre and ambient soundtrack, then don’t worry, The Shouting Matches are here. Formed sometime before Bon Iver hit it big, Justin Vernon & Co. make the kind of raw, stripped-down throwback rock and roll that will make you want to buy a pickup truck and move to South Carolina. With a wealth of resources now available, Justin Vernon decided to get back together with the band and release their 2013 album Grownass Man. Check out the track “Avery Hill” off that release below. Thao & the Get Down Stay Down – We Don’t Call

San Francisco’s Thao & the Get Down Stay Down produce the kind of alternative folk-rock that proves to be creativity at its purest form. Genuine innovation is experienced, as each song is able to to introduce something new. Be it syncopated saxophones, ever-changing percussion sections, or a mix of production elements, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down manage to keep ears perked from start to finish. The Impact has a feeling that these guys are about to get real big, real soon. Check out their song We Don’t Call” off their 2013 release We the Common below. Read More…

The Dear Hunter – Whisper

Providence, Rhode Island’s The Dear Hunter have been making a theatrical version of ambient hard rock since 2005. Musical mastermind Casey Crescenzo, along with his brother Nick, create a full, powerful sound spanning the spectrum of emotion. With a versatile arsenal of -driven storylines, each album has been a heroic tale of love and loss. The new album Migrant is their first concept-free album. Claiming to be the most honest album yet, it’s clearly pure experimentation at its best. Check out the music video for the new track “Whisper” off their 2013 album Migrant below. Read More…

The Dig – Two Sisters In Love

New York City-based The Dig make haze-laced music that could be closely categorized as Desert Rock. With a driving, yet lazy feel, The Dig do a great job of mixing straight-forward rock with the sonic qualities of more atmospheric music. Some have described them as “eerie post-punk.” The band is often compared to The Strokes solely due to the fact that they used to practice right next door to them.

Check out the track “Two Sisters In Love” off their 2010 debut album Electric Toys below. Read More…

The Republic of Wolves – Oarsman

Long Island’s The Republic of Wolves seem to be one of those bands that gets a lot of media buzz, but just can’t seem to garner the attention of fans. With a heavy, downtrodden rock sound, these guys often get compared to Devil and God-era Brand New, and with good reason. The two bands may sound like brothers separated at birth, but The Republic of Wolves brings with them a sense of grace that Brand New seems to lack (no offense hardcore fans). With only two EPs and one full-length, The Republic of Wolves are sure to be doing great things in music. Check out “Oarsman” off their debut LP Varuna below. Read More…
