History of the Show

Together with the guidance of Gary Reid and the approval of the Director Staff, I started The Asian Invasion, broadcasting the very first show on Monday, January 11, 2010.  The purpose was to bring something new and fresh to a diverse audience of students, including many Asian international students.  K-pop is currently rising in popularity all around the world and is not yet widely available to American audiences.

With my experiences living in Korea and specifically working as an intern at KBS Music Bank working with show writers, producers, artists, K-pop stars, and managers I learned about the K-pop industry.  I took a course on Hallyru (The Korean Wave) and while living in Korea, I discovered the Korean indie rock scene in the district of Hongdae (in Seoul) and amassed an extensive library of music from K-pop to punk.

The show’s goal is not only to bring something familiar to the ever-growing Asian student population at MSU, but also something fresh and different to MSU students and East Lansing listeners.  For the regular Impact fans, I wanted to pleasantly surprise them by showing that not all indie music has to come from America, England, or Scandanavia.  I believe K-pop is the next big genre that has already reached Europe, South America, and even the Middle East, and this is just one more way that the Impact is pioneering the future of music.
