Straight out of Tallahassee, Florida, Send Away Stranger makes some of the freshest and best emo/math rock around. With noodle-y guitar lines, ever-changing drums, and high-energy vocals, Send Away Stranger makes you want to jump up and kick some rear ends. Each instrument seems to be doing its own thing, independent of one another, and yet they combine to form a super-product, a perfect example of musical synergy. Check out their song “Beats Me, Dog”, off their 2011 EP Cool Wild Whatever below.

Though initially kind of a shock to the system, the pacing and instrumentation of the band’s include off-time and technical drums, extremely complicated and “noodle-y” guitar riffs, and soft-spoken, airy vocals. After a slew of lineup changes, the band have emerged as a three-piece (the reasons to be impressed should be piling up by now) and released the album 13.0.0.0.0 early this year. Formed sometime before Bon Iver hit it big, Justin Vernon & Co. make the kind of raw, stripped-down throwback rock and roll that will make you want to buy a pickup truck and move to South Carolina. With a wealth of resources now available, Justin Vernon decided to get back together with the band and release their 2013 album Grownass Man. Check out the track “Avery Hill” off that release below.

Actor/Musician Jason Schwartzman has had a foot in many musical projects during his expansive film career (remember that song “California” from The OC?), the most notable being his solo side-project Coconut Records. Started in 2006, Schwartzman makes infectious indie pop tunes that just make you want to dance. Though he hasn’t had a release since 2009, there are rumors of another album coming soon. But with a busy film career (we’re not complaining), it may take some time. Check out the single “Microphones” off his 2009 release Davy below.
