As the Seattle-based band progressed through their six albums and six EPs, their sound has been refined to a point of contention. They’ve managed, however, to keep their trademark sound: simple, yet progressive instrumentation, delicate song structures, and off-kilter vocals. Why does it seem that Dutch indie bands always find the coolest ways to different? Amsterdam’s Bettie Serveert bridge the gap between indie rock and progressive rock. Like a mix between Muse, The Blue Van, and Metric, the band make the kind of garage rock that would blow the freakin’ doors off. The distorted, guitar-based songs are constantly at odds with each other, creating a rather dynamic feel to their tenth album. Writing and recording all the parts, Thomas Calder mixes elements of indie rock, folk, and electronic music into one big, bright sound. Taking the name from an episode of The Twilight Zone, Calder has the vocal ability to match Muse and As Tall As Lions, achieving great power while maintaining a soft sound. Be it syncopated saxophones, ever-changing percussion sections, or a mix of production elements, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down manage to keep ears perked from start to finish. A shining light in the dim world of post-hardcore, Hail the Sun makes us remember why we got into the genre in the first place. Like a cross between Circa Survive and The Fall of Troy, Hail the Sun make the kind of heavy, yet catchy tunes that Pitchfork wouldn’t dare even cover. Delicate guitar lines are pounded by the quick, pulsating rhythms until they shatter into a mess of off-kilter pop-punk-esque romps. Tera Melos – New Chlorine

A band that could only come out of California, Tera Melos seems to enjoy confusing the crap out of their listeners. Jazz-based math rock with elements of electronic and house music thrown in, they’re actually considered to be innovators of the math rock scene. The rhythmic structure of each song can only be characterized as “chaotic.” Guitar-tapping, start-and-stop dynamics, and the extreme use of guitar pedals and effects make Tera Melos one of the most interesting bands to watch live. Providence, Rhode Island’s The Dear Hunter have been making a theatrical version of ambient hard rock since 2005. Musical mastermind Casey Crescenzo, along with his brother Nick, create a full, powerful sound spanning the spectrum of emotion. With a versatile arsenal of -driven storylines, each album has been a heroic tale of love and loss. The new album Migrant is their first concept-free album. Look Mexico – Not On My Watch

Florida’s Look Mexico are the best band you’ve never heard of. After a series of lineup changes, they began putting out music in 2006. With elements of math rock, post rock, and alternative, Look Mexico provide a new and refreshing take on music with each song. Chaotic yet controlled drums carry the song through sporadic, off-kilter guitar lines and bright, crisp vocals. Though their style has changed over the years, each album and EP they put out offers something new. Plus, all their song titles are Vin Diesel quotes, so there’s that.
