I have a love/hate relationship with this song and the phenomenon that has surrounded it this past year. I’m excited that a K-pop song has gone mainstream, but I’m disappointed it was this song and video. K-pop is so much more than some goofy guy in sunglasses doing a ridiculous dance. Not to mention that it’s really painful to continually hear “Gang-nam” mispronounced when it’s not even hard to pronounce.
For years, many different K-pop groups and solo artists have actively been trying to break into the American market (and therefore the global market), but have not quite succeeded. While international superstar singer/actor/dancer Rain made it onto the Colbert Report, and the Wonder Girls — whose “Nobody” was the #1 song in Asia in 2011 — even toured briefly with the Jonas Brothers; the American market is the largest and hardest to break in to in the world. Very talented groups like Big Bang and 2NE1 are able to sell out arenas in the US, but mainstream American culture is oblivious to music sung in any language but English (with the exception of a few Spanish phrases tossed in).
Phantom made a comeback this year with their first mini-album “Phantom City,” which included several songs under various genres. This one, however, shined the most.
City Pulse Live’s Year-End Wrap-Up Show kicks off with a discussion of the year’s biggest stories with Kyle Melinn. Berl and Andy then talk with Ari Adler, spokesman for Speaker of the House Jase Bolger, Lynn Martinez, Former Lansing Democratic State Representative, Walt Sorg, City Pulse Columnist/Contributor, and Susan Demas, MIRS writer and MLive blogger, about what’s in store for 2013.
LGBT Legal Project Staff Attorney for ACLU of Michigan, Jay Kaplan, calls in to discuss two cases involving same sex marriages and the involvement of the federal government. Scott Hagerstrom, executive director of Americans for Prosperity of Michigan, also calls in to talk about some of the recent events that transpired at the capital as well as other local politics. Later we hear an interview with mayor Verg Bernaro concerning the consolidation of local governments and the right to work.
Alex has his first guest of the semester Josh Mansour on again. Josh discusses Laveon Bell and the MSU football team as well as other Spartan Sports. David Zuckerman assists and discusses the Detroit Lions as well as other Michigan Sports.
If you’re expecting your typical metal show, you’re looking at the wrong show. We’ll play what satellite radio won’t. Playing the heaviest metal from the 70’s all the way to the most obscure modern metal ranging from Bay City Thrash all the way to Scandinavian Black Metal. We don’t leave hardcore out either; anything from Black Flag and Minor Threat all the way to modern bands like Integrity, Converge, Vaccine and Xibalba will find their way on the airwaves.
The uninitiated metal can be known to have been started during the time of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. This transitioned into what is known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, featuring bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. This influenced Thrash Metal, which in turn influenced Death and Black Metal. Every new metal genre searches for a heavier and more aggressive sound. We aim to get the full spectrum for you.
From its existence starting in the 90s, Thee Hourz O Power, Lansing’s premier metal show, has consistently delivered heavy music and always will!
